A traveling question?

I will be traveling to England, but I don't want to stay in London. What other towns, just outside of London would be a good alternative? I still want to be close enough to the city, so that I can at least take a train, but I want the main part of my stay to be in the rural settings, along the English country side.

Answers:
It's easy to travel by train to anywhere in England from London. Visit Dorset (as suggested above, I'm from there so have to big it up!) Devon is really beautiful too, try to visit Totnes if you can, it was voted one of the top 10 funkiest towns in the world by British Airways!

Try Brighton or Oxford or Canterbury.
Good train and bus services to London.
Stay down in Dorset.you can have the New forest nr you which is beautiful and some lovely country villages to look round,or you can have the beaches close by too.Only an hour or so,s train ride from London but a different way of life at a slower pace.Bournemouth has plenty of shops or night life and Poole has the second biggest natural harbour in the world.
